ITEM Travel Turkey explores the Black Sea Region, rich in history with influences from Pontus to Rome, and Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman civilizations. This area features monasteries, churches, historical mansions, castles, ancient settlements, and rock tombs. The Sumela Monastery, a Greek Orthodox site in Trabzon Province, is one of the oldest in Christianity. Founded by Athenian priests Barnabas and Sophronius during Emperor Theodosius I's reign (AD 375-395), it was restored in the 6th and 13th centuries. Yason Church, built in 1868 by Georgians and Greeks, is a key Christian site on Yason Cape, Ordu. Its structure, church yard walls, ancient port ruins, and old fishing ponds remain intact. Santa Ruins in Gümüşhane is an ancient site established as a medieval mining town in the 1500s, significant for its mining industry.
