Zeyrek neighborhood holds the honor of being the first settlement established after Istanbul’s conquest. The tomb of Fatih Sultan Mehmet is also located here. The Zeyrek Mosque lending its name to the neighborhood, can be spotted from afar due to its impressive architecture. The original name of the mosque was the Pantokrator Monastery Church, and it was the second-largest church in

Istanbul, with the first being Hagia Sophia. Built mid the 12th century this mosque keeps many architectural mysteries and a fine mosaic floor that can be seen with a special permit. Many of the houses around the mosque contain underground cisterns and other Byzantine structures, sometimes discovered by luck due to recent constructions and road improvements.

Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, a hidden 500-year-old treasure in Istanbul, opened in September 2023 following an ambitious thirteen-year long restoration project. Accompanied by a museum, contemporary art space and private gardens

Examining the historic houses and movie scenes worth streets leads to the Vefa quarter and further to Şehzade Mosque built by the famous architect, Mimar Sinan back in the 16th century. Even though the exterior looks similar to any other Turkish mosque, the interiors are stunning. The details on the ceiling which are quite dramatic.

Vefa, framed by the iconic 4th-century Aqueduct of Valens is in the heart of the old city, but retains a sense of locality and rusty charm, less known to the mainstream routes. Fun fact that one of Nobel Laureate writer Orhan Pamuk’s favorite places in Vefa is Vefa Bozacısı, place selling boza, a thick, almost pudding-like drink made from fermented millet.
