On Rails through the Andes with Enigma Peru

Enigma Peru curates experiences in Peru’s most extraordinary landscapes, which are best seen slowly, from a window, at altitude. The Andean Explorer leaves Cusco and crosses the high plains toward Lake Titicaca, passing La Raya at more than 4,300 meters, where the altiplano opens wide and the Andes seem to stretch beyond the edge of the glass. There is a particular stillness to seeing Peru this way, as the train moves at its measured pace through the long sweep of the plains and the quiet shift from mountains to open sky. By the time Lake Titicaca appears at Puno, vast and silver at 3,812 meters above sea level, the journey has become more than a route. It feels like one of Peru’s most graceful revelations. In this fast-moving world, it feels pretty rebellious and indulgent to take the scenic route. But the momentum of the train really connects travelers to the landscape in such a tangible way that they can see this little slice of the country unreachable by car or plane, disconnecting from the frenetic world of modern travel and slowing down to see and enjoy the moment, life, and the world at a different pace. They get to witness all of the “in-between” sights, which have as much to say—if not more!—about the country as its known attractions.

Peru offers some of the world’s most iconic train routes, such as the one connecting the iconic Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machupicchu, to satisfy different schedules and service standards, in the hands of world-renowned companies such as Belmond (formerly Orient Express) and Inca Rail. Peru also features the first sleeper train in all of South America—a three-day and two-night journey crossing the high Andean plateau, passing by Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake on earth, and reaching the “White City” of Arequipa after traversing national reserves with wild vicuña galloping next to the train. Remote and untouched areas, exotic landscapes and people, and enticing adventures await in this fascinating country and culture.
